What I Learned as a Non Developer

I have always been curious as to how the Metal Toad Hackathons have operated. Going to the hackathon presentations, I was always so impressed by all the projects people presented and never thought that I could participate. But I was very wrong and pleasantly surprised when this most recent hackathon required company wide participation.

My group was with Marilia, Kevin, Michael, Alex, and Marcela. Even in that short window of time, I learned so much about the company and got to know more amazing people at Metal Toad.

Here’s what I learned:

  1. Being a team player doesn’t mean being a savant. When I first joined, I felt a little bad that I wasn’t a developer, so I initially wasn’t sure how I could contribute. But the team was very kind and asked that I help come up with prompts for the bot to learn from. I was also in charge of designing the graphic design for Masterbot.
  2. Graphic design is not just about making things look nice, but also it's about balancing function with aesthetic while also matching the companies style. This makes me appreciate our graphic designer at Metal Toad, Luisa so much more.
  3. Metal toads values are truly the heart of the corporate culture. I’ve always known that Metal Toad takes its values seriously, but the more I get to know the employees at Metal Toad the more I truly appreciate the values. Everyone at Metal Toad has been nothing but kind and patient to me.

This project not only taught me something new, but also helped me appreciate the dev team, HR, and our graphic designer as well. So much goes on in a company and project, and I couldn't have been happier .
