Winds of Change: Claviate's Journey to a Smarter Maintenance Platform

BUSINESS PROBLEM

Claviate is a leading greentech platform that optimizes the complex process of setting up and maintaining wind turbines. Their technology improves transparency, helping deliver projects with maximum speed and optimized budgets. Using cameras and artificial intelligence, Claviate has built a visual data platform that provides wind turbine manufacturers and wind farm developers with unprecedented insight.

However, with such an enormous amount of information to organize and deliver, including video, sensor data and maintenance logs, Claviate’s platform was not aging well. It had acquired technical debt. User experience issues were increasing. These challenges were affecting the platform’s utility and value for its users.

Metal Toad was engaged by Claviate to re-design and re-engineer this maintenance portal, and ensure it fully delivers on Claviate’s mission and value proposition.

TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION

Through a comprehensive discovery, design and implementation process, Metal Toad was able to address the core issues faced by Claviate and develop a technology solution that met their needs 

Metal Toad’s UX design team created new, visually appealing, intuitive, and easy-to-use interfaces to improve user experience and navigation.

The team employed ReactJS front-end and AWS Cloudfront to provide a scalable platform.  To ensure the security of the platform Metal Toad implemented AWS WAF and worked with Claviate’s engineers to design a modern Authentication for their API and improve the interoperability of the APIs and get them working better with the front-end. 

Metal Toad also overhauled Claviate’s video management functionality, integrating it with AWS Batch, Stepfunctions, and Amazon Eventbridge to build an event-driven timeline view to provide a more intuitive way to navigate the maintenance history of a given wind farm. 

In addition to addressing Claviate’s technical debt issues, Metal Toad also provided guidance on how they could leverage the AWS Cloud to maximize performance and reduce hosting costs.

IMPACT

The update was a huge success and has greatly improved usability across the platform, as shown in the images above. The team was able to reduce technical debt, improve performance, and future-proof the portal by using modern front-end frameworks that will be easier to support going forward. This enabled Claviate to ensure optimal performance of their software – now and into the future. 

With Metal Toad’s expertise in AWS machine learning, application development, architecture, migration, and DevOps, the team was able to create a modern, aesthetic, performant, and useful dashboard for Claviate. And most importantly, this update allows Claviate to provide a better value and experience for their customers as they work to create a clean energy future.
